We are seeking applicants for our Museum Assistant summer positions!
Please note that the final number of positions hired, and the duration of employment are conditional on final approval from the funding bodies.
SALARY : $16/hour + 4% vacation pay
HOURS: 35 hours/week, maximum of 16 weeks (approx. May 10th – August 27th 2021, start date negotiable, final contract length funding dependent). Hours of work are generally 9am-5pm Tuesday-Saturday, with occasional evening or holiday work as needed.
LOCATION: Work will take place onsite at the Bulkley Valley Museum; offsite work is not available due to the nature of the tasks outlined for the position.
Duties for this position include:
- Assist with development and delivery of a week-long summer camp for kids aged 7-11
- Assist with day-to-day operations and visitor services, including opening/closing the museum, greeting and counting visitors, completing gift shop sales, answering questions, etc.
- Assist with takedown of traveling exhibit and setup of new exhibit
- Rehousing photo negative collection in acid free storage materials
- Digitize artifacts and archival items using digital photography and scanning equipment, including processing digitized newspapers through OCR software
- Research contributing to programming, exhibits, and events
Individuals studying university or college history, anthropology, archaeology, museum studies, library or archival studies, or related fields will be a priority for hiring. Individuals studying in other fields, or youth in high school demonstrating relevant skillsets and/or experience are also welcome to apply.
Must possess excellent written and oral communication skills. Must be able to work independently, including self-directed research. Must have experience using Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and Powerpoint. The candidate must be comfortable interacting with the public, including with children and youth in an educational setting. Previous experience in a museum or heritage/culture organization, or with programming/supervision of youth (e.g., coaching, refereeing) considered strong assets. Familiarity with museum or archival database software, digital scanning hardware/software, sound or video editing softwares, or digital photography considered assets. Prior customer service or visitor services experience considered an asset.
