The BV Museum welcomes applications for our 2025 full-time summer positions!
Please note that the final number of positions hired, and the duration of employment are conditional on final approval from the funding bodies.
SALARY : $18/hour + 4% vacation pay
HOURS: 35 hours/week, for 16 weeks (approx. May 6 – August 23 2024, start date negotiable). Hours of work are 9am-5pm, Tuesday-Friday and 9am-2pm Saturday. Occasional evening or holiday work may be required by the museum’s activities.
LOCATION: Work will take place onsite at the Bulkley Valley Museum; offsite work is not available due to the nature of the tasks outlined for the position.
DUTIES:
Duties for this position include:
- Develop programming for kid’s summer camp, including: create daily activity themes and schedules, update/develop curriculum of activities, test activities and create models, inventory and purchase required supplies, create and present supply budget
- Assist Programmer with deliver summer camp programming, including assisting with supervision of participants and participating in/leading activities
- Visitors services, including greeting and orienting visitors, completing gift shop sales, and representing the museum at community events
- Research and develop a tour of historic features of the Central Park Building for 100th anniversary celebration in June
- Assist with take-down of temporary exhibit and setup of new traveling exhibit in August
- Assist with delivery of school class programming in May and June
- Complete digital photography for museum artifact collection items
- Online and archival research contributing to programming and exhibition development
- Research and write short columns for weekly museum newspaper column “From the Back Room” published in the Smithers Interior News
- Operational assistance: students are keyholders who assist with opening and closing the museum and light cleaning duties (e.g. dusting display cases)
QUALIFICATIONS:
Youth studying post-secondary history, Indigenous studies, anthropology, archaeology, museum studies, art history, education, library or archival studies, or with demonstrated experience in those fields will be a priority for hiring. Students from other post-secondary fields, or high school students demonstrating relevant skill-sets and/or experience are also welcome to apply.
- Must possesses excellent written and oral communication skills
- Must be able to work independently, including completing self-directed research
- Must be comfortable using Microsoft Word and Excel (or Google Docs/Sheets)
- Must be comfortable regularly interacting with the public, including working with children or youth in an educational setting, talking to visitors, etc. P
- Previous experience in a museum or heritage/culture organization, or with programming or supervision of youth and children (e.g. coaching, babysitting) are considered strong assets.
- Prior customer service or visitor services experience considered a strong asset.
- Familiarity with digital scanning hardware or software, sound or video editing softwares, digital photography, or digital design (including Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, etc.) are considered assets
- Must be fluent (written and oral) in English. Written and/or oral communication in French or another language considered an asset

***Funder Eligibility Criteria***
All Applicants MUST be aged 15-30 and Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or have refugee protection. Evidence of student status (registered student in previous semester, returning to studies in the fall) will be required for any positions hired through Young Canada Works funding.
