In 1918 a deadly virus swept across a world already suffering from the losses of the First World War. What became known as the "Spanish Flu" would leave few untouched, whether they were sick themselves, or lost family and friends. Our exhibit INFLUENZA: The Spanish Flu in Smithers marks the 100th anniversary of this pandemic, tracing the spread of the virus to Smithers. Without the railway, the Town of Smithers as we know it today would not exist. Smithers was created by the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway in 1913, and generations of Smithereens have been employed directly and indirectly by its successors Canadian National and Via Rail. As we reflect on the past 150 years since Confederation, we also reflect on the story of our community, and the rail lines that connected it to the broader tides of history.

What We Wore: An Exhibition of Clothing, Shoes and Hats

Economics, work, play, preference, pleasure, practicality, rites of passage — each of these are reflected in the clothing we wear.  The clothing in our collection was donated for a particular reason - ties to local historical events and people, memories of past fashions and years gone by, clothing marking special occasions.
