BC’s First Village: 100th Anniversary of Smithers’ Incorporation

March 12, 2021 - January 30, 2022

One hundred years ago, in 1921, Smithers become the first village in British Columbia to incorporate under the Village Municipalities Act. The Bulkley Valley Museum is marking this anniversary with a new exhibit that discusses the history of the pre-incorporation citizen government, the Smithers Citizens' Association, how incorporation came to be, who was excluded from early municipal affairs, and how this anniversary has been marked in the past. Our Living Languages

On loan from the Royal BC Museum, this special traveling exhibition encourages Canadians to learn more about the challenges faced by Indigenous communities in British Columbia as they work to revitalize their languages. British Columbia is known as a linguistic "hotspot" because of the diversity and vitality of Indigenous languages in the province - 34 of the 60 Indigenous languages spoken in Canada can be heard in British Columbia.
