Our Living Languages
On loan from the Royal BC Museum, this special traveling exhibition encourages Canadians to learn more about the challenges faced by Indigenous communities in British Columbia as they work to revitalize their languages. British Columbia is known as a linguistic "hotspot" because of the diversity and vitality of Indigenous languages in the province - 34 of the 60 Indigenous languages spoken in Canada can be heard in British Columbia. The Babine Lake Mammoth: Bones From an Ice Age Giant
In 1971 an incredible discovery was made on the shores of Lake Babine when a mining excavation revealed the bones of an ice age giant. Excavated by a team from the Canadian Geological Institute, the bones of the Babine Lake Mammoth have been part of the collections of the Canadian Museum of Nature since the 1970s. Fabulous Forests and Marvellous Mushrooms
Art and museums combine with a fantastic collaboration this January - Fabulous Forests and Marvellous Mushrooms! We are collaborating with the Smithers Art Gallery to bring together two fabulous exhibitions in one building: BC's Marvellous Mushrooms, a traveling exhibition on loan from the Royal BC Museum, and the 2024 Community Art show. From the Back Room
Our permanent collection includes over 3400 artifacts, over 10,000 photographs, and nearly countless archival documents, maps, newspapers, and more. However, we only have space to display about 1% of those items at any one time.
